Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and International Engineering Conference 2014 (UNIMAS STEM EnCon2014)

The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and International Engineering Conference 2014 (UNIMAS STEM EnCon2014) was held in Kuching, Sarawak from 8th to 10th December 2014.

With the theme “Advances in Process Engineering, Green Technology and STEM Education”, the conference was organized by the Faculty of Engineering, UNIMAS in a strategic partnership with Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS).

Endorsed by the Sarawak State Government and in collaboration with Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB), the event was officiate by YB Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the Assistant Minister of Sports.

UNIMAS STEM EnCon2014 hopes to  provide an avenue for professionals, academicians and industries to highlight and transfer research findings and developments in Process Engineering and Green Energy through its 16 technical sessions, while also creating a platform for roughly 200 professionals, academicians and industries to network and exchange ideas on developments in the field of Process Engineering, Green Energy and STEM education.

Highlights of the conference included our prominent keynote addresses by Emeritus Professor Dr Martin Rhodes from Monash University, Australia; Datuk Torstein Dale Sjotveit from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB); Professor Ir Dr Mohd Sobri Takriff from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; and Professor Ir Dr Dominic Foo Chwan Yee from Nottingham University, Malaysia Branch.

Held at the Riverside Majestic Hotel, exhibitions and information booths by RECODA, SEB, TEGAS and NREB  were also on display.

UNIMAS STEM EnCon2014 was also used as a platform to disseminate information on SCORE’s current progress and development, as well as other information relevant to industries and the public. The event hopes to complement the state government’s and SCORE’s efforts to modernize education and produce skilled manpower.

British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce visits Samalaju Industrial Park

On 6th November 2014, a delegation from the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) visited Samalaju Industrial Park in Sarawak.

Participated in by SME companies from the United Kingdom interested in Malaysia as a potential investment destination, as well as British and Malaysian members of the BMCC interested in understanding more about Sarawak, the primary objective of the delegation was to explore the strategic offering of Sarawak via SCORE developments.

The BMCC delegation also met with prominent personalities from Sarawak. The 60-strong delegation also included representatives of the BMCC Board of Directors as well as representatives from the Official High Commissioner.

Visit by Honourable Minister, Assistant Ministers and Political Secretaries to Tanjung Manis

On 5th November 2014, members of the Barisan Nasional State Legislative Assembly, Assistant Ministers and Political Secretaries to the Chief Minister of Sarawak, held a visit to Tanjung Manis Industrial Zone in order to attend a briefing on the latest developments occurring in Tanjung Manis.

The briefing was held by YBhg Haji Sarudu bin Hoklai, General Manager of Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation, and Tuan Haji Samat Junai, the Director of the Halal Hub Unit from the Chief Minister’s Department.

The visit was headed by the Minister of Industrial Development Sarawak, YB Datuk Amar Hj Awang Tengah.

Courtesy visit from Consulate General’s Office of China

On November 4th 2014, His Excellency Mr Liu Quan the Consulate General of China made a courtesy visit to Tan Sri Wilson Baya Dandot at his office in Petra Jaya. Consul General Mr Liu Quan was given a comprehensive briefing on developments within SCORE and was suitably impressed by the efforts of the State to develop the corridor. He expressed his thanks to Tan Sri Wilson and his team for their hospitality and Tan Sri Wilson thanked the Consul General for taking the time to visit his office.

Meeting on Samalaju Industrial Park Liaison Committee

Chairman of the Samalaju Industrial Park Liaison Committee, YB Datuk Peter Nansian, welcomed committee members and representatives of different government agencies to their meeting on November 3rd 2014. During the meeting, the General Manager of Sakura Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd, Mr Chris Rowe, briefed the committee on their project in Samalaju.

A number of other issues were discussed and addressed before the meeting closed at the appointed time.

Royal Malaysian Customs Department officers visit Samalaju Industrial Park

On 29 October 2014, a group of officers from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department held a working visit to Samalaju Industrial Park. Headed by the Deputy Director General (Management) of the Customs Department, YBhg Dato’ Abdul Rahman bin Othman, the group was briefed by Mr Kamil Daniel Yap of RECODA on the latest progress and developments at Samalaju Industrial Park.

The meeting also covered a presentation on the current construction progress of Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd and was followed by a visit to Samalaju Industrial Park.

Other customs officers present during the briefing and site visit includes YBhg Datin Dayang Fatima binti Johari, Director of the Sarawak Customs Department; Tuan Mohamad Zubil bin Din; Tuan Othman bin Yaacob; Tuan Rabki bin Mat Said; Tuan Mohd Apendai bin Salleh and Puan Janet ak Ajang.
